Who is Keiko Mori? Woman Arrested in Japan for Keeping Daughter’s Body in Freezer for 20 years

Japanese police announced on Thursday that they had arrested a 75-year-old woman, Keiko Mori, who allegedly admitted to storing the body of her daughter in a freezer for around 20 years.

Investigators discovered the remains of an adult woman on Tuesday inside a deep freezer at the home of Keiko Mori in Ibaraki prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, a local police spokesman said on condition of anonymity.

Mori reportedly identified the body as that of her daughter, Makiko, who was born in 1975 and would be 49 or 50 years old if alive. The spokesman noted that the body was already in an advanced state of decay, and an autopsy will be carried out to establish the cause of death.

According to police, Mori came forward on Tuesday with a relative and disclosed that she had kept her daughter’s body in a freezer. When officers accompanied her to the residence, they found the remains dressed in a T-shirt and underwear, positioned face-down on its knees inside the freezer.

Mori was taken into custody on suspicion of abandoning a body. She reportedly told investigators that she bought the freezer after the smell began spreading throughout the house and placed the body inside.

Police confirmed that Mori had several children, though they did not specify the number or reveal what they had told investigators regarding Makiko. Authorities added that Mori had been living alone following the recent death of her husband earlier this month.
