Massive Fire Erupts at Chevron Refinery in El Segundo, Near Los Angeles

03 October, 2025 12:10

A huge fire broke out at the Chevron refinery in El Segundo, California, just south of Los Angeles. The fire started late in the evening and quickly spread inside the facility, according to local reports.

Fire and Emergency Response

Residents reported hearing loud explosions before flames were seen rising from the refinery. Local fire crews, along with Chevron’s own fire department, rushed to the site. Officials confirmed that the fire was contained to one section of the refinery.

LA County Supervisor Holly Mitchell said the fire could affect air quality in nearby areas. People living close to the refinery were told to stay indoors as a safety measure.

Shelter-in-Place Alert

Authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for parts of Manhattan Beach, which is only two miles away from the refinery. Winds from the west-southwest carried smoke across Los Angeles, raising concerns about pollution.

Air monitors showed most locations had “Good” conditions, but some areas east of El Segundo recorded a short spike in harmful particles.

Government Response

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom were both updated on the incident. Firefighters remained at the scene late into the night to prevent further damage.

Impact on Flights and Refinery Operations

Officials at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), located nearby, confirmed that flights were not disturbed by the fire.

The Chevron refinery in El Segundo is the largest oil-producing plant on the U.S. West Coast. Built in 1911, it processes about 276,000 barrels of crude oil every day.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Updates are expected as emergency teams continue their work.
