11 October, 2025 11:39

An 86-year-old woman, Maria Nunez, tragically died after being mauled by two dogs in her yard on Tuesday in Appling County, Georgia. Authorities have arrested her neighbor, Misty Ann Branch, 53, in connection with the deadly incident.

What Happened to Maria Nunez?

Deputies from the Appling County Sheriff’s Office were called to Poplar Lane around noon on Wednesday. When they arrived, they found Maria Nunez dead outside her home.
Investigators quickly confirmed that she had been killed in a dog attack.

Charges Against Misty Ann Branch

According to officials, the two dogs responsible for the attack belonged to Misty Ann Branch, who lives nearby. She has been charged with reckless conduct and involuntary manslaughter.
Both dogs were removed from her property, and Branch was booked into the Appling County Jail.

Security Footage Confirmed the Attack

Chief Deputy Gene Davis stated that security camera footage helped identify the dogs involved. He also acknowledged growing community concerns about dangerous animals in the county.

Growing Concerns Over Animal Control

This incident has sparked serious debate about the lack of animal control services in Appling County. In 2024, another woman, 59-year-old Estine Castillo, survived an attack by four dogs while walking.
Though the two cases are unrelated, residents are now demanding stronger action to prevent future tragedies.

“We do have a dog problem… We are working with the board of commissioners to rectify the situation,” said Deputy Gene Davis.
