Darius McCrary, best known for his role on Family Matters, was arrested on October 5 by the United States Border Patrol near the U.S.-Mexico border in California due to an out-of-state felony warrant. According to multiple reports, including TMZ, the arrest was classified as a “fugitive arrest” stemming from a missed court date in Michigan related to unpaid child support.
McCrary’s representative explained that the warrant resulted from him skipping a court appearance in Michigan. They added that the notice was sent to a P.O. Box, allowing only three days to appear in court. Unfortunately, McCrary was diagnosed with COVID-19 and did not check his mail until after the court date had passed. The actor promptly informed the judge and provided a doctor’s note confirming his illness.
In a statement to US Weekly, the representative revealed that McCrary was actually at the border partnering with a real estate developer working on building homes for the homeless in Tijuana, Mexico. “Darius was doing a good deed when he discovered he had a felony warrant at the Border of Mexico,” they said.
The representative also confirmed that McCrary’s 18-year-old son benefits from a trust fund established by the actor, which provides monthly financial support.
McCrary has been married three times. He first married Juliette M. Vann in 2005; they separated in 2006. He later married Karrine Steffans in 2009, but the marriage ended two years later. In 2015, he married Tammy Brawner, with whom he later faced legal battles over child support. The couple finalized their divorce in February 2019, sharing a daughter named Zoey. McCrary is currently unmarried and has three children.
Following the divorce, McCrary was ordered to pay $1,366 per month in child support. His legal troubles began in 2015 when he was first arrested in Michigan for failing to pay child support; he paid a $5,500 fine before his release. In 2023, he was arrested again for similar violations, owing $52,788.04 with missed payments dating back to March 2019. His bond was set at $13,197, and he was ordered to wear a GPS monitor.
During a 2024 appearance on the No Jumper podcast, McCrary reflected on his struggles with the child support battle, stating, “It brought a lot of anguish. My children man. It’s hard for a man to be a father in this country especially let alone I hate to say this … [when] you’re a Black man you have double the problems.” He also opened up about his mental health, revealing, “I was going through a serious depression. I’ve never really had bouts of depression because life has been really good. But what people don’t understand about life is you got to take the good with the bad.”
This latest arrest adds to McCrary’s ongoing legal challenges as he navigates complex family and financial issues.
