20 October, 2025 16:48

A GoFundMe campaign set up to support former Major League Baseball catcher Jesús Montero has raised more than $5,000 following his tragic death on October 19, 2025. The Venezuelan athlete, who played for the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners, passed away two weeks after a severe motorcycle accident in his hometown of Valencia, Venezuela.

The fundraiser, started by Michele Camacho with Montero’s family, aimed to help cover rising medical bills. Updates shared before his death described his critical condition and ongoing surgeries.

“Jesús remains in the ICU, under critical condition. He recently underwent surgery to stabilize his leg, which was successful, but he still needs a chest surgery, which is complex but necessary for his recovery. We know the road ahead is long, but we trust in his strength and in all the love and support you’ve shown,” the campaign stated.

Accident Details

Montero’s accident occurred early on October 4, when a van collided with his motorcycle. The 35-year-old was taken to Ciudad Hospitalario Dr. Enrique Tejera, suffering serious leg injuries, multiple fractured ribs, and internal damage to his lungs and kidneys. He was placed in an induced coma and began dialysis in his final days.

Tributes

The Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP) confirmed his death on social media:

“Today, Venezuelan baseball is in mourning. Jesús Montero, a former Yankees prospect with five years of MLB experience and six seasons in the LVBP, has passed away in Valencia.”

The New York Yankees also expressed condolences:

“The Yankees are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jesús Montero. We send our sincerest condolences to his family & loved ones.”

Reports suggest the van driver was allegedly intoxicated. Montero is survived by his children, Loren Alejandra and Jesús Alejandro, with Venezuelan model Taneth Gimenez.

The GoFundMe page remains active, reflecting support for Montero’s family and the enduring impact he made on and off the field.
