How to Protect Yourself from Smog: Simple Tips for Safety

27 October, 2025 11:45

Smog, a harmful mixture of fog and smoke, has become a significant environmental concern, particularly in urban areas. It poses serious health risks, including respiratory issues, irritation of the eyes, and skin problems. Fortunately, there are several measures you can take to protect yourself from smog and ensure your well-being.

The first step is to limit outdoor activities on smoggy days, especially during early mornings when the smog is at its peak. If you must go outside, it’s crucial to wear a high-quality mask, such as an N-95 or N-99 mask, which is designed to filter out harmful airborne particles. “Ordinary cloth masks are not sufficient for this purpose,” so make sure the mask fits properly to prevent air from bypassing your nose and mouth.

Inside, maintaining good air quality is essential. Use an air purifier to keep the indoor air clean and close doors and windows to prevent smog from entering. If an air purifier isn’t available, you can use plants like aloe vera or spider plants, which help purify the air naturally. In addition, staying hydrated is vital—drinking plenty of water helps flush out toxins and alleviates dryness in the throat.

Paying attention to your diet can also help protect your body from the harmful effects of smog. Consuming foods rich in antioxidants, such as fruits like oranges and apples, and vegetables like spinach and carrots, can boost your immune system and help combat toxins. Avoid smoking and other pollution-related activities, as they exacerbate the impact of smog on your health.

Lastly, monitor the Air Quality Index (AQI) of your area regularly. If smog levels are high, refrain from unnecessary outdoor activities, and take extra care with children and the elderly, who are more vulnerable. On a broader scale, using public transport and promoting tree planting are great ways to contribute to improving the environment and reducing smog.

By following these steps, you can minimize the negative effects of smog on your health while also contributing to cleaner air and a better environment for everyone.
