Is the San Diego Zoo Penguins Break-In Story Real or Fake?

01 November, 2025 12:40

A viral Facebook post claiming that two men broke into the San Diego Zoo to dress up penguins as surfers has been debunked as fake. The post, which quickly spread across social media, depicted an absurd scene of penguins in wetsuits, sunglasses, and tiny board shorts. According to the story, the men allegedly managed to transform several penguins into surfers before escaping the zoo, and the entire incident was supposedly captured on the zoo’s security cameras.

In response, San Diego Zoo officials clarified that no such break-in occurred, and the penguins were reported to be in good health. The zoo has not released any official statement regarding a break-in, and there are no records of such an event. Additionally, the image used in the post was revealed to be AI-generated, and the Facebook page behind the viral story, Curious Zone, is known for posting fake news for entertainment purposes.

Despite this, the post garnered widespread attention, with over 87,000 reactions. Some social media users noticed the AI-generated image, while others were convinced the story was real. One commenter humorously noted, “Not saying it was me, but this is some shenanigans I would get up to.” Another user commented, “This is the most wholesome crime I’ve heard,” acknowledging the absurdity of the situation while highlighting that no harm was done to the penguins.

The viral post also referenced the popular animated film “Surf’s Up,” with one zookeeper reportedly saying, “Surf’s up,” a line famously used in the movie. Released in 2007, Surf’s Up is a mockumentary-style animated film about surfing penguins. The film received critical acclaim and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2007 Academy Awards.

The movie’s sequel, “Surf’s Up 2: WaveMania,” debuted in 2017, and a live-action TV series adaptation is currently in the works. The show, aimed at children aged six to nine, will feature 11-minute episodes and will explore the fun and adventurous world of surfing penguins.
