“Grand Theft Auto” Movie Backed by Paramount – 2028 Release Claim Debunked

A recent social media post claimed that a movie adaptation of the popular video game Grand Theft Auto is in development at Paramount, with an original story while maintaining the game’s locations and production design. The post, shared on November 5, 2025, by a page called Discussing Fish on X (formerly Twitter), also alleged that the film would hit theaters in October 2028 and included a link to an IGN article published on November 4.

However, the rumors have been debunked. Discussing Fish is a parody account known for spreading false claims, including one suggesting that Taylor Swift was planning to release a “Nazi mode” by Christmas, which was also untrue. Rockstar Games, the publisher of Grand Theft Auto, has not announced any plans for a film adaptation, and the IGN article linked in the post contained no information about such a movie.

Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar, previously addressed the idea of a GTA film in an interview with The Ankler in June 2024. He explained that while the team had discussions with film executives over the years, they ultimately decided against pursuing a movie due to the lack of creative control and the high financial risks involved. Houser said:

“They thought we’d be blinded by the lights and that just wasn’t the case. We had what we considered to be multi-billion-dollar IP, and the economics never made sense. The risk never made sense. In those days, the perception was that games made poor-quality movies.”

Although a full-length GTA film is unlikely at this time, a documentary inspired by the game, titled Grand Theft Hamlet, was released in 2024. The film, which features characters staging a production of Hamlet within the game, premiered at SXSW before a theatrical release in December 2024 and is currently streaming on MUBI.

The Grand Theft Auto franchise, created by David Jones and Mike Dailly in 1997, has been critically acclaimed for decades. The upcoming installment, Grand Theft Auto VI, is scheduled for release in May 2026.
