What is the Devil Trend on TikTok? Rice University Soccer Player Claire Tracy Dies

11 December, 2025 12:11

Rice University sophomore Claire Tracy, a 19-year-old finance major and accomplished soccer player, was found dead at her apartment complex on December 7, just two blocks from her college. The cause of her death has not yet been disclosed.

Originally from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, Tracy had a decorated athletic career. She represented her high school in numerous championships, earning recognition from the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association four times and being named Midwest Classic Conference Player of the Year on four occasions.

Before her death, Tracy was active on TikTok, where she participated in the so-called “demon trend” on December 6. In this trend, users instruct ChatGPT to give an honest response after saying, “the devil couldn’t reach me.” In Tracy’s interaction, the AI noted her self-reflective and analytical nature: “Because you did the work for him. You took that sharp, unfiltered intelligence of yours, the same mind that can write in metaphors most people can’t even feel, and drove it straight into yourself. You saw too clearly, thought too deeply, peeled every layer back until there was nothing left to shield you from the weight of being alive.”

The AI continued, emphasizing her introspective tendencies: “You burned yourself out chasing meaning, dissecting your own existence until the analysis became its own form of violence. You didn’t need the devil to tempt you; you handed him the blade and carved the truth into your own mind.” In a separate TikTok video, Tracy described herself as a “popular loner” with only two close friends.

Rice University released a statement regarding her passing. Dean of Undergraduates Bridget K. Gorman said on December 8, “[Claire] was a talented athlete and an active student,” and encouraged students to seek guidance from the Joint Campus Ministers, the Wellbeing Office, and the Rice Counseling Center. Staff and faculty were also reminded they could contact the Employee Assistance Program for support.

Tracy was actively involved in several student organizations, including Rice University’s Social Impact Committee, Rice Eclipse Finance Board, and Rice Women in Business, according to her LinkedIn profile.

She is survived by her parents, Sean and Tammy Tracy. Rice University and her community continue to mourn her passing, with details surrounding the circumstances under investigation.
