Why was Sherrone Moore arrested? Firing from University of Michigan Over Staffer Relationship
Sherrone Moore, the former head coach of Michigan football, was detained on Wednesday, December 10, shortly after being fired from his position. According to The Detroit News, Moore, a former Oklahoma Sooners guard, was booked at the Washtenaw County Jail at approximately 8:30 p.m.
Court records, as reported by USA Today, indicate that no charges have yet been filed. The arrest followed reports of a domestic incident, prompting an investigation by Pittsfield Township police. Authorities confirmed that a suspect was taken into custody in connection with an alleged assault, though they noted that the incident “does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community.” The suspect, Moore, was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail pending review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor.
The alleged incident reportedly occurred at an apartment, where Moore allegedly attacked a woman and made concerning statements about harming himself, according to Amber Marie Green, founder and editor-in-chief of AMG Sports Media. She shared details of the arrest on Facebook, stating: “He [Moore] also allegedly made concerning statements about harming himself. Police located him and took him into custody.”
The University of Michigan terminated Moore the same day due to an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Michigan Athletics Director Warde Manuel announced: “U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately.” He added: “Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member…This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”
Biff Poggi has been appointed as the interim head coach of the Wolverines following Moore’s dismissal.
According to AMG Sports Media, the affair allegedly resulted in a pregnancy, which Moore reportedly paid to terminate. As a result of being terminated for cause, the University is not required to pay Moore the remaining value of his reported $5 million-a-year contract.
While the University has not named the staffer involved, reports suggest it may be Paige Shiver, who served as Moore’s executive assistant, handling administrative coordination, recruiting assistance, and team operations. Shiver reportedly deactivated her X and LinkedIn accounts and made her Instagram private following the controversy. Neither Moore nor the University has issued statements on unverified rumors regarding Shiver.
The investigation into the domestic incident remains ongoing, with authorities withholding further details due to the sensitive nature of the allegations.
