19 December, 2025 10:48

Dubai witnessed a spectacular weather scene on Thursday as lightning struck the tip of the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower, during heavy rainfall.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence, shared a video of the rare phenomenon. The footage shows the iconic tower standing tall against green, cloud-filled skies as a bolt of lightning hits its peak.

UAE Faces Unstable Weather

The dramatic strike came as the UAE experienced heavy rain in several areas. Parts of Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah also reported rainfall and hail on Thursday.

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) confirmed that the UAE is under the peak of the ‘Al Bashayer’ low-pressure system. The system has extended from the Red Sea, creating unstable weather across the country.

“The UAE is affected by an unstable weather situation due to an extension of a surface low-pressure system from the Red Sea. This will result in cloud formations of varying heights, leading to rainfall of different intensities accompanied by lightning, thunder, and a chance of hail over limited areas,” NCM said.

Safety Warnings

Authorities have advised residents to stay alert and follow official weather updates. Precautions are recommended during periods of heavy rain, lightning, and hail to ensure safety.

Sheikh Hamdan had earlier urged residents to prepare for rainy days, posting Instagram Reels showing moving rain clouds over the sand dunes and a weather map forecasting rainfall over the coming days.
