Police have found a body during the search for a missing teenager, believed to be Tom Dingle, a 19-year-old university student from Wigan.
Tom was last seen in the early hours of Saturday, December 13, walking alone in Appley Bridge, West Lancashire. CCTV footage showed him moving through the area before he disappeared. He was reported missing shortly afterwards.
A large-scale search operation was launched, involving police officers, specialist search teams, and members of the local community. The search continued for nearly two weeks.
In a statement released on Christmas Day, police said a member of the public discovered a body in woodland off Lees Lane in Dalton at 3:12pm on December 25.
Officers said they believe the body is that of Tom Dingle, although formal identification has not yet been completed. Tom’s family has been informed and is being supported by specially trained officers.
Police confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious. A file will now be prepared for the coroner, who will conduct an inquest in due course.
Tom was a student at Lancaster University, which had earlier issued an appeal for information and expressed serious concern for his welfare.
Police thanked members of the public for sharing appeals and assisting with enquiries. They have asked for privacy and respect for Tom’s family at this difficult time.
The discovery brings a tragic end to the search, with hopes of Tom’s safe return sadly unfulfilled.
