Newton-le-Willows Hospital Attack: Six Injured After Agitated Man Denied Appointment
Six people were treated for injuries following an alleged attack at Newton Community Hospital in Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside, after a man was refused a hospital appointment. The injuries, which included head lacerations, bruising, and cuts to the arms and hands, have been described as stable by authorities.
A Merseyside Police spokesperson confirmed that a 20-year-old man, originally from Afghanistan and living in Newton-le-Willows, was arrested at the scene. He faces six counts of wounding, affray, and criminal damage, and has since been detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act.
Police reported that the suspect became “increasingly agitated” after his appointment request was denied, damaging a hospital counter before allegedly assaulting several staff and visitors. The metal bar reportedly used during the attack was recovered for forensic examination.
Local Councillor Seve Gomez-Aspron, whose father lives near the hospital, said, “I can only thank Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service for such a swift and efficient response, running into a scenario where danger is unknown. It’s a shock, but as always, we need to await the full facts without speculation.”
Superintendent Sarah Rotherham added, “We understand that this incident would have caused concern for the local community and I hope the public feel reassured by the increased police presence. I would ask anyone with concerns to speak to one of our officers or contact their local police station.”
Authorities have maintained a scene at the hospital and set up a mobile police station on site to support ongoing investigations and ensure public safety.
