Nurse Meg Lynch Survives Brutal Crowbar Attack by Afghan Migrant in Merseyside Hospital

A district nurse has recounted a harrowing ordeal after being attacked by a 20-year-old Afghan man wielding a crowbar at Newton Community Hospital in Newton-Le-Willows, Merseyside. Nurse Meg Lynch, 28, described the attack as life-threatening, saying, “I’m so, so, so lucky I’m still alive and I’m so lucky I ran when I did.”

The assault occurred as Ms. Lynch was getting a drink from a vending machine. She suffered multiple blows to the head before managing to flee and hide from her attacker. Following the attack, she was treated at a nearby accident and emergency unit, where she underwent a CT scan and had her head stitched back together after the blood was cleaned from her injuries.

The alleged assailant reportedly attacked after being refused an appointment at the hospital. He was arrested at the scene on suspicion of six counts of Section 18 wounding, affray, and criminal damage. Merseyside Police confirmed he has been detained under the Mental Health Act, and high-visibility patrols have been deployed in the local area.

Ms. Lynch, who recently completed her first year as a nurse, shared her relief, stating, “I’m home and safe with my family taking care of me.” She added, “I honestly don’t know why this man did this to me and other workers of the hospital.”

All six victims of the attack are reported to be in stable condition, with injuries including head lacerations, bruising, and injuries to arms and hands. Police confirmed that the metal bar used in the attack has been recovered for forensic examination and that CCTV footage and witness statements are under review.

Local authorities emphasized public safety, with St Helens Local Policing Superintendent Sarah Rotherham stating, “We understand that this incident would have caused concern for the local community and I hope the public feel reassured by the increased police presence.”

Support for Ms. Lynch has poured in from colleagues and the wider community. Fellow nurse Andrea Vickers commented, “For this to happen to one of the kindest, cheeriest souls I have the pleasure of knowing is absolutely gutting! Sending hugs and lots of love.”
