Why France Granted Citizenship to George and Amal Clooney?

The French government has defended its decision to grant citizenship to George and Amal Clooney and their two children, following criticism from some officials who questioned the fairness of the process.

On December 27, 2025, France confirmed that the Hollywood actor, the internationally known human rights lawyer, and their eight-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, were granted French citizenship through naturalization. The announcement quickly sparked debate within political circles and on social media.

Responding to the controversy, the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs issued a statement on December 31, 2025, firmly rejecting claims of preferential treatment. The ministry stressed that the Clooney family completed all legal requirements.

“The Clooneys followed a rigorous procedure, including security checks, regulatory naturalization interviews at the prefecture, and the payment of tax stamps. We are delighted, like many French people, to welcome George and Amal Clooney into the national community.”

The ministry further explained that French law allows citizenship to be granted to “any foreigner … who contributes through their distinguished actions to the influence of France and the prosperity of its international economic relations.”

Despite this defense, criticism emerged from within the government. Marie-Pierre Vedrenne, a junior deputy at the Interior Ministry, said in a radio interview that the move raised an “issue of fairness,” adding that it sent “the wrong message” and appeared to reflect “double standards.” She said she intended to review “the entire procedure.”

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez dismissed the criticism, stating that the Clooneys were naturalized by official decree and that it was a “decision of the public authority.” He described the family’s naturalization as a “great chance for our country.”

The news also drew international attention. US President Donald Trump commented on Truth Social, writing: “Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France, which is, sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration.”

George and Amal Clooney have been residing at their estate in France since 2021, according to reports.
