Myanmar Cuts Prison Sentences, Reducing Aung San Suu Kyi’s Jail Term

30 April, 2026 10:33

Myanmar’s military-backed leadership has announced a nationwide reduction in prison sentences, cutting all inmates’ remaining terms by one-sixth, a decision that also affects detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

A source close to Suu Kyi’s party said the move would further shorten her imprisonment, although the exact duration remaining is still uncertain.

“We also don’t know exactly how many years she has left,” the source told AFP, speaking anonymously due to security concerns.

Suu Kyi has been detained since the 2021 military coup that overthrew her elected government, an event that triggered widespread unrest and ongoing civil conflict across Myanmar.

The country is now led by Min Aung Hlaing, who recently transitioned from military chief to civilian president following a restricted election criticized by international observers.

Democracy advocates have described the political process as a rebranding of military rule, arguing that recent reforms are largely symbolic.

A statement from the presidential office confirmed that prisoners will “have their remaining sentences cut by one-sixth” to mark a public holiday.

Although Suu Kyi was not named directly, the political source confirmed that the policy also applies to her sentence, stating she “will also get one-sixth reduction of her remaining sentences”.

However, uncertainty remains over how much of her lengthy prison term has already been considered served within Myanmar’s opaque legal system.

Suu Kyi was originally convicted in multiple closed-door trials on charges including corruption and violations of Covid-19 regulations, resulting in a sentence exceeding three decades.

In 2023, a partial pardon reduced her sentence to 27 years, with further adjustments made in subsequent government orders.

The recent directive follows another similar order issued earlier this month by Min Aung Hlaing after assuming the presidency, which also reduced prison terms for various detainees.

Authorities additionally pardoned Win Myint, Suu Kyi’s former close ally and ceremonial president, raising speculation that further easing of her detention conditions could follow.

Despite being largely isolated from the public, Suu Kyi remains a highly popular figure in Myanmar, with concerns growing over her health and prolonged incommunicado detention.
