US Military Commander to Brief Trump on New Iran Strike Options

30 April, 2026 11:09

US President Donald Trump is expected to receive a high-level military briefing on Thursday regarding potential new military options against Iran, according to a report by Axios.

The briefing will be delivered by General Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, who is expected to outline several strategic scenarios. The White House and Centcom have not publicly commented on the report.

According to the sources cited, Centcom has prepared plans for a “short and powerful” wave of strikes targeting Iran, which may include key infrastructure sites.

A fragile ceasefire has been in place for three weeks following a conflict that began when US and Israeli forces launched strikes on Iran on February 28. Iran responded with retaliatory attacks across Israel and Gulf regions hosting US bases.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in widespread casualties and displacement, further escalating regional instability.

Trump has previously warned about the possibility of targeting Iranian civilian infrastructure, statements that legal experts argue could violate international humanitarian law under the Geneva Conventions, which prohibit attacks on essential civilian facilities.

Another plan reportedly under review involves a military operation to secure parts of the Strait of Hormuz in order to restore commercial shipping routes. The operation could potentially involve ground forces, according to the report.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route, handles nearly 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, and tensions have significantly disrupted maritime traffic.

Washington is also reportedly seeking to increase pressure on Tehran to negotiate over its nuclear program.

Another option expected to be discussed includes a special forces operation aimed at securing Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium.

Trump has repeatedly described Iran’s nuclear program as an urgent threat, while Iran maintains that its nuclear activities are peaceful and compliant with international agreements under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The briefing is also expected to include participation from General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
