Araghchi says Netanyahu’s gamble cost US four times official estimate
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has rejected Pentagon claims about the cost of the war on Iran, saying the United States is facing much higher financial losses than officially reported.
On Friday, he wrote on X: “The Pentagon is lying. Netanyahu’s gamble has directly cost America $100b so far, four times what is claimed,”. He added, “Indirect costs for U.S. taxpayers are FAR higher. Monthly bill for each American household is $500 and rising fast,”.
He also said, “Israel First always means America Last,” referring to what he described as US involvement in the conflict linked to Israel.
His remarks come after reports that the Pentagon estimated the war cost at $25 billion, a figure now being questioned. According to a CNN report, internal sources say the real cost could be between $40 billion and $50 billion, excluding damage to US bases in the region.
Experts believe the total cost could be even higher. Harvard Kennedy School professor Linda Bilmes said, “I am certain we will reach $1 trillion for the Iran war,” estimating daily costs at around $2 billion during the conflict period.
She also warned that long-term expenses such as rebuilding bases, replacing military equipment, and veteran care could significantly increase the total burden.
Meanwhile, online trackers suggest the war has already cost about $67 billion.
US Senator Bernie Sanders also criticized the spending, saying, “Somehow, there is always money for war, but never enough money for housing, education or the needs of working people.”
The conflict between Iran and US-Israeli forces began on February 28 with airstrikes and heavy attacks. Iran reported over 3,300 deaths and responded with missile and drone strikes on regional targets.
Iran also restricted access through the Strait of Hormuz for countries supporting the aggression, which led to a rise in oil prices.
A temporary ceasefire was brokered by Pakistan on April 8, but talks later stalled due to disagreements between the two sides. Iran continues to demand an end to the blockade on its ports before further negotiations.
