King Charles to Deliver King’s Speech as Starmer Faces Leadership Challenges
On Wednesday 13 May, King Charles delivers the King’s Speech at the state of Parliament as Sir Keir Starmer faces a battle to stay on as prime minister.
Despite its name, the King’s Speech is not written by the monarch but by the government, which uses it to detail the laws it proposes to make over the next 12 months.
A number of ministers, including Jess Phillips and Alex Davies-Jones, have resigned and appealed to the PM to act in the country’s interest and outline a departure timetable.
While at least 80 workers MPs are calling for a change in leadership, while more than 100 have rallied behind, backed Sir Keir and asked” not to resign and warning that “this is no time for a leadership contest.”
The King’s Speech, which outlines the government’s legislative priorities for the next parliamentary session, will cover immigration, green energy, and reforms to special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) schooling.
It will further set out legislation designed to tackle state-backed organizations, including the possible proscription of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.
