UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper Says Israel's Military Escalation in Lebanon Has 'Eroded Space for Diplomacy'
British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has made an unusually candid admission, acknowledging that Israel’s intensifying military campaign in Lebanon has severely undermined diplomatic efforts to bring about a lasting resolution to the conflict.
In a post published on X on Sunday night, Cooper wrote:Â “Israel’s military escalation in Lebanon has killed and displaced civilians, destroyed infrastructure, and eroded space for diplomacy. It must end.”
The statement reflects growing unease within Western capitals over Israel’s continued violations of the April ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah, which have included repeated military incursions north of the Litani River, strikes on civilian residential areas, and displacement orders affecting communities in southern Lebanon. These operations have resulted in substantial civilian casualties and widespread destruction of Lebanese infrastructure despite the truce being nominally in effect.
However, Cooper’s remarks also drew criticism for simultaneously calling on Hezbollah to halt its operations and disarm. “All sides must respect the ceasefire and engage with negotiations in good faith,” she added — a formulation that critics argue assigns equal responsibility to the resistance movement while Israel continues its military offensive and occupation.
The statement is seen by many observers as emblematic of a broader Western contradiction: acknowledging the destructive impact of Israeli military actions on one hand, while demanding the disarmament of Hezbollah — the force that Lebanon has relied upon to defend its sovereignty — on the other.
Cooper’s remarks come as international pressure on Israel continues to mount. Lebanese media reported that at least eight people were killed and 20 others wounded in Israeli strikes on Sunday alone, including attacks on residential homes.
According to Lebanese authorities, since early March Israeli military operations have killed more than 3,371 people, wounded over 10,129 others, and forced more than 1.6 million people from their homes. Despite successive ceasefire extensions, Israeli airstrikes and ground operations have continued across multiple parts of Lebanon.
Israel has maintained that its offensive is aimed at pushing Hezbollah forces further from the border and neutralizing what it describes as ongoing cross-border threats to northern and central Israeli territory. Hezbollah, in turn, insists its operations constitute a legitimate defensive response to Israeli military aggression and incursions into Lebanese sovereign territory.
