The US Vice President JD Vance set off for Switzerland on Saturday to join talks with Iran aimed at ending the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Speaking at Joint Base Andrews before his departure, Vance briefed reporters that the discussions will center on two main issues. Iran’s nuclear program and the ongoing ceasefire situation in Lebanon. He stated that he looking forward for growth in the negotiations, even though adding that he may only attend for a day or two.
The negotiations were due to start in Switzerland on Friday but were postponed at the final moment after repeated viciousness in the region. Israel launched attacks in Lebanon in response to the killing of four of its soldiers, more deterioration stiffness in the area.
After that, both sides, Israel and Hezbollah blamed the other of violating the new ceasefire, which was involved in a primary deal reversed by the US and Iran earlier this week.
JD Vance specified that while tensions remain, the circumstances in Lebanon is presenting signs of slow development. He highlighted that continued attention is essential to preserve constancy and confirm the protection of Israel and Lebanon.
He pointed out that the back-and-forth cycle of strikes and retaliation is one of the biggest obstacles to sustaining peace. He said the priority is to pause the fighting so the ceasefire can take hold and reduce the risk of escalation.
According to Vance, US negotiators Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff were already in Switzerland and were focusing on the technical details of the talks.
