Crackdown on illegal Afghan Migrants Intensifies in Turkiye New Arrests

09 July, 2026 11:39

Several countries are increasing action against illegal Afghan migrants as concerns over human smuggling continue to grow. Authorities say illegal migration has become a major security challenge in Europe.

According to Afghan International, Turkish authorities arrested 24 Afghan nationals who were trying to travel illegally from Türkiye to Europe.

The arrests were made in the Turkish city of Edirne. Among those detained were seven women and six children. Turkish police also arrested a bus driver accused of transporting the migrants illegally.

Türkiye’s Migration Agency said that 16,436 Afghan nationals were detained during the first five months of this year for not having valid residence permits.

Two days earlier, Polish authorities also arrested 15 Afghan nationals who had entered the country illegally.

A British media outlet has previously reported that the Taliban government’s strict policies and fear of reprisals have been major reasons behind the rise in illegal migration by Afghan citizens.

The recent arrests show that many countries are stepping up efforts to stop illegal migration and are taking stricter action against those staying or traveling without legal documents.
