July 13, 1931: The Bloody Day That Changed Kashmir Forever

13 July, 2026 10:13

July 13, 1931 remains one of the most significant and emotional chapters in Kashmir’s history. It is widely remembered as the beginning of Kashmir’s political awakening and a symbol of the people’s struggle against oppression.

On July 13, 1931, the Dogra regime opened fire on unarmed Kashmiri Muslim protesters outside the Central Jail in Srinagar, martyring 22 innocent Kashmiris and injuring nearly 50 others.

The protesters had gathered outside the prison where Abdul Qadeer Khan, a prominent Kashmiri leader, was being presented before the court. As the proceedings continued, the time for prayer arrived.

A young man stepped forward to deliver the Azan (call to prayer). Before he could complete it, he was shot dead by Dogra forces. As he fell, another young man courageously continued the Azan from where it had stopped, only to be martyred as well.

One after another, brave Kashmiris stepped forward to complete the call to prayer despite knowing they faced certain death. The Dogra forces then unleashed indiscriminate gunfire on the unarmed crowd, resulting in the martyrdom of 22 Kashmiris.

The tragedy not only transformed the political history of Jammu and Kashmir but also marked the beginning of a new era of political consciousness and resistance among the Kashmiri people.

To this day, the fallen heroes are remembered with deep respect as the Martyrs of Kashmir, whose sacrifice continues to inspire generations seeking justice, dignity, and freedom.

The graves of these martyrs, located within the premises of the Khwaja Naqshband Shrine in Srinagar, remain a lasting symbol of courage, faith, sacrifice, and unwavering resilience. Their legacy continues to occupy a special place in the collective memory of the people of Kashmir.
