Manipur Burns Again as Modi Government’s Failed Policies Fuel Ethnic Violence

13 July, 2026 09:51

A fresh wave of ethnic violence has once again engulfed the Indian state of Manipur, exposing what critics describe as the Modi government’s complete failure to restore peace and protect civilians despite repeated promises.

According to the Indian newspaper The Statesman, several houses were deliberately set on fire in southern Imphal district, triggering renewed ethnic clashes and spreading fear among local residents. The latest violence has further highlighted the deteriorating security situation under the Modi administration.

The report stated that the arson attacks intensified tensions in the region, forcing authorities to deploy a heavy contingent of security forces in an attempt to contain the unrest. Despite the increased deployment, questions continue to mount over the government’s inability to prevent recurring violence.

Authorities arrested two individuals, including the head of Heingang village, in connection with the incident. However, critics argue that isolated arrests cannot conceal the broader failure of the Modi government to address the root causes of the conflict.

Indian human rights activist Nandita Haksar sharply criticized the Modi government, accusing it of using allegations of foreign interference to divert attention from its own governance failures instead of confronting the real issues driving ethnic unrest.

She said the latest violence clearly demonstrates that the Modi government has failed to restore law and order in Manipur, leaving thousands of residents trapped in a cycle of fear, insecurity, and instability.

Political observers say the repeated outbreaks of violence have severely damaged the Modi government’s credibility, raising serious concerns over its handling of one of India’s most volatile internal conflicts. They argue that despite tall claims of stability and development, Manipur continues to suffer from deepening ethnic divisions, recurring violence, and an ineffective government response.
