Modi Government Faces Criticism Over Pellet Gun Use in New Delhi
India’s Modi government is facing criticism over the alleged use of pellet guns against protesters in New Delhi. The use of force against civilians, previously reported in occupied Kashmir and Manipur, has now become a major concern in the capital as well.
Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi displayed a young protester who was reportedly injured by a pellet gun during a demonstration. He said the youth lost an eye after police fired pellets during the protest.
Rahul Gandhi also alleged that police used excessive force and baton-charged thousands of young protesters. The protesters were reportedly demonstrating peacefully against leaked exam papers and the loss of years of hard work.
Experts say protests by Indian youth against the Modi government have spread from New Delhi to other cities following exam paper leaks. They believe growing unrest and public dissatisfaction are increasing pressure on the government.
