Iran Rejects US Land Blockade Threat, Says Washington Has Failed

12 October, 2026 16:23

Iran has rejected US statements about a possible land blockade, saying Washington has failed to achieve its goals through its aggressive policies and will not succeed in the future.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei made the remarks in response to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s statement about a land blockade of Iran.

Baghaei said the hostility and aggressive intentions of US officials were clear. He added that Iran did not expect any positive approach from Washington because its current statements reflected its overall policies.

Iran Responds to Marco Rubio’s Remarks

Baghaei also referred to a recent statement by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who reportedly described the current conflict as being 2,000 years old. The Iranian spokesperson questioned what kind of response Tehran could expect from Washington in such circumstances.

He said continued US pressure and actions against Iran went against international law and the basic principles governing relations between countries.

Baghaei added that Washington was trying to increase pressure on Tehran, but Iran would continue its diplomatic engagement with other countries.

World Understands US Actions, Says Baghaei

The Iranian spokesperson said the United States had failed to achieve its objectives because countries around the world had begun to understand the legal and diplomatic consequences of its actions.

He maintained that measures against a sovereign state must follow international law and the principles governing relations between countries.

Despite US pressure, Iran would continue its diplomatic and economic relations with other nations, he added.

What Is the Issue of a US Land Blockade?

Bessent’s statement about a possible land blockade comes as military and economic tensions between Washington and Tehran continue.

Iran shares land borders with several countries, including Turkey, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkmenistan. These routes are important for trade, the movement of goods and regional economic ties.

However, the US statement alone does not confirm that a blockade of all Iran’s land borders has been imposed. Independent confirmation would be needed to establish whether such a measure has been implemented, how far it would extend and whether neighbouring countries would cooperate.

Iran Seeks Stronger Ties With Regional Countries

Baghaei also discussed Iran’s participation in a summit of Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) leaders in Turkmenistan. He said the Iranian president attended the meeting as a special guest for the first time.

According to Baghaei, Iran has proposed continuing such meetings to strengthen cooperation. He added that Tehran maintains good relations with all CIS member states and that these meetings could help improve bilateral and regional ties.

Regional Diplomacy Remains Important for Iran

Iran considers economic and diplomatic relations with Central Asian countries, Russia and the Caucasus region important for trade, energy, transport and regional cooperation.

Amid growing US economic pressure, Tehran is seeking to expand regional ties and explore new opportunities for cooperation with other countries.

Baghaei’s remarks indicate that Iran intends to rely on international law, regional diplomacy and relations with neighbouring countries in response to US pressure and statements about a possible blockade.
