Le Pen, Melenchon Gain Ground as France Faces Increasing Political Polarization

12 October, 2026 16:11

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen and hard-left politician Jean-Luc Melenchon have strengthened their positions against mainstream rivals, raising the prospect of a sharply polarized presidential election as President Emmanuel Macron approaches the end of his second and final term. According to a Toluna Harris Interactive national survey conducted from October 5 to 8, Le Pen would secure between 35% and 37% of first-round votes, depending on the scenario, up from 33% to 36% in a similar poll last month.

Melenchon, leader of the left-wing France Unbowed (LFI) party, is projected to reach the presidential run-off in all five scenarios examined by the pollster. The findings suggest that France’s traditional political centre is facing mounting challenges from both the far right and the hard left, creating opportunities for Le Pen’s National Rally and Melenchon’s movement as support for mainstream parties weakens.

Le Pen reached the presidential run-off in 2017 and 2022 but lost to Macron on both occasions, while Melenchon finished third in both elections, narrowly missing the second round in 2022. The shifting political landscape comes amid public concerns over economic growth, the cost of living and international instability. A potential Le Pen–Melenchon run-off would bring two sharply contrasting political visions into direct competition and could further challenge France’s established political parties.
