Elon Musk Praises EU for Forcing Universal USB-C Charging Standard

20 October, 2026 16:07

Tesla and X chief executive Elon Musk has praised European Union regulators for enforcing a common USB-C charging standard across electronic devices, including Apple’s product ecosystem. Musk acknowledged the policy’s benefits, saying credit should be given where it is due for the shift away from proprietary connectors such as Apple’s Lightning port. His remarks highlight a rare instance of a major technology executive publicly supporting a regulatory measure that requires industry-wide standardization.

The EU’s common charger legislation aims to simplify charging for consumers by allowing compatible devices to use the same type of cable, reducing the need to carry multiple chargers. The policy also seeks to limit electronic waste by reducing the number of redundant chargers and accessories discarded by consumers. Apple gradually transitioned its devices to USB-C, including its iPhone lineup, following the introduction of the EU requirements.

Musk’s comments have drawn attention to the debate over government regulation and technology companies’ control over proprietary systems. The EU mandate reflects a broader effort to promote interoperability, reduce electronic waste and improve consumer convenience. The approach also echoes the principle of standardization in charging infrastructure, an area where Tesla has expanded access to its Supercharger network to vehicles from other manufacturers.
