US Orders Removal of China’s DeepSeek AI from Federal Government Networks

20 October, 2026 16:00

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has ordered federal civilian executive-branch agencies to remove technology developed by Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek from their information technology networks. The directive also covers third-party products and services that use DeepSeek’s AI models, as Washington intensifies scrutiny of potential cybersecurity risks associated with Chinese technology.

Under the order, US civilian government agencies are also prohibited from acquiring DeepSeek products and third-party services developed using its AI models. The restrictions aim to prevent the technology from being introduced into government systems and limit potential risks associated with its use by federal employees and contractors.

DHS has warned that DeepSeek presents “multiple threat vectors,” raising concerns that its use by government employees or vendors could result in sensitive information being transferred to the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The move reflects growing US concerns over data security, foreign technology dependencies and the protection of confidential government information amid intensifying technological competition between Washington and Beijing.
