Saudi Arabia Says Drone Targeting Shaybah Oil Field Was Intercepted, Two Foreign Nationals Killed

22 October, 2026 08:32

Saudi Arabia has reported intercepting a drone that attempted to target the Shaybah oil field in the kingdom’s Eastern Province. Two foreign nationals were killed and two others injured by falling debris after the drone was destroyed, according to a statement attributed to the Saudi Ministry of Energy.

Arab media reports identified the two deceased individuals as nationals of the Philippines and Nepal. The injured included one Pakistani and one Indian national.

The ministry’s statement did not provide further details about the injuries or the condition of those receiving treatment.

According to the report, debris from the intercepted drone also caused a fire in a vehicle belonging to a contractor working at the oil facility. The vehicle was reportedly located outside the installation’s boundary.

Oil operations reportedly unaffected

Saudi authorities said the incident did not disrupt operations at the Shaybah oil field, and no interruption to oil production or other activities was reported.

The Shaybah facility is one of Saudi Arabia’s significant oil installations. An attack on the site could therefore raise concerns about the security of energy infrastructure and the potential consequences for regional oil supplies.

No group had immediately claimed responsibility for the reported incident in the supplied account. The report linked the incident to a broader pattern of recent attacks attributed to the Houthi militia, but did not provide independently verified evidence establishing responsibility for this particular drone.

Questions remain over the incident

Saudi authorities did not disclose the drone’s origin, flight path or intended target in further detail. The available information also does not establish who launched it.

The reported deaths and injuries highlight the risks faced by workers at critical energy facilities during regional tensions. Further information from Saudi authorities would be needed to establish the circumstances of the incident and determine responsibility.
