Pakistan calls for redoubling global efforts to reduce risks of disasters.

The government of Pakistan has called for redoubling global efforts, including sharing of experiences, knowledge and transfer of technology, to mitigate risks of disasters and to save lives.

Foreign Office made this suggestion in a statement on the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

It said these efforts should be made under the United Nations and other international platforms.

The Foreign Office said Pakistan has strengthened the response capacity of its institutions at the national, provincial and district levels.

Furthermore, it said the strength of our governance systems tested in the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic.

It said while we have successfully contained the initial outbreak and continue to mitigate its long-term socio-economic impacts.

Moreover, it cited Pakistan launched its renewed National Disaster Response Plan 2019.

Pakistan government did so with a view to improving the level of preparedness and strengthening the capacity of the country to respond.

Background

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction began in 1989.

United Nations General Assembly called for a day to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction.

Observances of the day aims at encouraging individuals, communities and governments to take part in building more disaster resilient communities and nations.
