16 December, 2024 19:20

Gree Electric, the Chinese home appliance manufacturer has developed its own chips.

Chinese media on Monday citing its chairwoman said that Gree developed its own chip six years after the company embarked on efforts to do so.

Chairwoman Dong Mingzhu told Sina.com that the firm had achieved capabilities in chip design, research and manufacturing, all without funding support from the Chinese government.

Dong Mingzhu did not detail what kind of chips her company was now able to make.

Earlier, Gree Electric in 2018 set up a subsidiary to design chips for air conditioners and the company announced that it wanted to move into making more smart home products.

At the time, the chairwoman said that the company had spent 4 billion yuan ($549.45 million) a year on purchasing chips for its air conditioners.

In March this year, she announced that the company is in the process of setting up a Silicon Carbide (SiC) chip factory. She said that the factory may start production in June.

In recent years, other Chinese smartphone and appliance makers such as Xiaomi and Midea have also developed their own chips in pursuit of self-reliance.
