Death toll from South Korea plane crash rises to 124

29 December, 2024 10:37

As many as 124 passengers were killed when an airliner veered off the runway and caught fire as it slammed into a wall at South Korea’s Muan International Airport on Sunday.

Arriving from the Thai capital Bangkok with 181 people on board, Jeju Air flight 7C2216, was attempting to land shortly after 9am at the airport, South Korea’s transport ministry said.

Muan fire chief Lee Jung-hyun told a briefing that the fire was extinguished by 1pm. He added that only the tail part retains a little bit of shape while the rest of the plane looks almost impossible to recognise.

Lee further said that airport authorities had switched from rescue to recovery operations. Because of the force of the impact, they are searching nearby areas for bodies possibly thrown from the plane.

The two rescued crew members are being treated at hospitals with medium to severe injuries, said the hospital sources.

Most of the 175 passengers and six crew were presumed dead, Yonhap news agency citing a fire official said.
