New rain, snowfall spell expected to affect parts of country today

17 February, 2025 15:59

A powerful westerly weather system is expected to impact parts of Pakistan from today (Monday) until February 22, 2025, according to meteorologist Jawad Memon. The system will affect 70 to 80 northern regions, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Memon predicted snowfall in mountainous areas, with moderate to heavy rainfall expected in several regions. However, Sindh is unlikely to experience any rain from this system.

Balochistan is set to receive significant rainfall, with snowfall predicted in Quetta, Ziarat, Zhob, Qila Saifullah, and Khuzdar. Light to moderate rain is also expected in Gwadar, Pasni, Turbat, and Ormara, with some areas facing hailstorms.

In Punjab, good rainfall is forecast between February 19 and 21, particularly in southern and central areas. Two to three rain spells are expected, and some areas may experience hailstorms. Islamabad and its surroundings will also see two to three rain spells during this period.

Karachi, however, will not receive rain from this system but may experience partially cloudy skies today. Memon stated that the western winds will help reduce dry and dusty conditions, while humidity will increase. The last week of February is expected to bring cooler weather to the city.

Once the system subsides, a cold wave is expected to affect northern regions of Pakistan.
