Consuming sugary drinks significantly increases risk of mouth cancer: study

16 March, 2025 15:14

A new study has found that people who drink sugar-rich soft drinks or drinks daily are five times more likely to get oral cancer than those who avoid it.

Research from the University of Washington said that cases of oral cancer are increasing alarmingly, especially in young, non-smoking, non-alcoholic patients without any identifiable risk factors.

Some experts have expressed concern that food is a major contributor to this growing number.

For decades, oral cancer has been primarily associated with men at known risk of cancer, such as chewing tobacco, alcohol and betel nut.

But now research from the University of Washington has found that consuming sugary drinks significantly increases the risk of mouth cancer, regardless of their smoking or drinking habits.
