Torkham trade route reopens after 25 days
In a significant development, the Torkham trade route between Pakistan and Afghanistan has officially been reopened after 25 days.
The move comes following a successful meeting between officials from Pakistan and Afghanistan, with authorities deploying personnel at both crossing points to oversee operations.
The meeting was head at Afghan Customs House near the border, where officials from both sides endorsed the decision made during the joint tribal Jirga a couple of days ago.
With the reopening of the trade corridor, cargo trucks have started crossing into Afghanistan from Pakistan.
Security sources confirm that tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have eased, allowing trade to resume.
Under the currently agreement, only bilateral trade through the route is allowed, while for pedestrian crossing it would reopen in two days.
Around 1,500 cargo trucks on average pass through the Torkham crossing daily.
It is reported that bilateral trade through Torkham generates approximately $3 million in daily revenue for Pakistan, while the total trade volume between both countries via this routes averages at $1.5 billion per day.
Earlier, security sources disclosed that the venue for the flag meeting had been changed from the Pakistani side of the border to the Afghan Customs Station upon the request of Afghan officials.
