Punjab School Summer Vacations 2025 – When will schools close?

15 April, 2025 16:38

As temperatures continue to rise across Punjab, concerns are mounting among parents, teachers, and students. On April 13, 2025, the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued a heatwave warning, highlighting serious health risks for schoolchildren and staff.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, temperatures are expected to increase by 4 to 7°C in the coming weeks. This alarming forecast may push the provincial government to announce early summer vacations, potentially before mid-May 2025.

What’s the Government Doing About It?

In response to the growing heat threat, the Punjab government, in collaboration with the PDMA, is taking preventive action. On April 13, PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia officially recommended that the School Education Department and local authorities begin planning for an early summer break. The move comes after a directive from the provincial government to prioritize student safety.

Temporary Safety Measures for Schools

While the final decision on summer vacation dates is still pending, the government has rolled out several urgent guidelines for schools to follow:

  • Revised School Timings: Classes should now run from 7:00 AM to 11:30 AM to avoid peak heat hours between 11 AM and 4 PM. Many schools adopted these hours starting April 10, 2025.

  • Cool Drinking Water: All schools must ensure the availability of clean, chilled water to prevent dehydration.

  • Ban on Outdoor Activities: Sports, assemblies, or any outdoor events during hot hours are strictly prohibited.

  • Light and Comfortable Clothing: Students are encouraged to wear loose, breathable clothes to help beat the heat.

  • Ventilated Classrooms: Schools must have working fans and ensure proper airflow to keep classrooms cool.

  • First-Aid Preparedness: Every school must set up a first-aid station with trained staff to handle heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion or heatstroke.
