Cornal Hendricks dead at 37: Rugby star dies ‘after heart attack’ as heartbroken team remember ‘infectious smile’
Former Springbok winger Cornal Hendricks has sadly passed away at the age of 37. The heartbreaking news was confirmed by South Africa Rugby on Thursday morning. The cause of death is believed to be a suspected heart attack.
Cornal Hendricks was a much-loved rugby player who played 12 international matches for South Africa between 2014 and 2015, scoring five tries. He also played for the country’s rugby sevens team, winning gold medals at the 2013 World Games and 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Club Career and Health Battle
Hendricks spent his club career playing for teams in South Africa. He represented the Boland Cavaliers, Cheetahs, Stormers, Blue Bulls, and Vodacom Bulls from 2008 to 2024. In 2016, he signed a contract with Toulon in France’s Top 14 league but did not play any matches.
That same year, his career took a difficult turn. While with the Stormers, he was diagnosed with a serious heart condition. Many believed his rugby journey was over.
However, Hendricks made a powerful comeback in 2019 with the Bulls. He went on to win two Currie Cups and came close to returning to the national team before retiring in 2024. His last match was against Northampton Saints in the Champions Cup quarter-finals.
Tributes Pour In
Following his death, SA Rugby President Mark Alexander praised Hendricks as a “remarkable athlete” who always played with an infectious smile. He said Cornal’s energy and love for life inspired many, both on and off the field.
“We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Cornal Hendricks. He was a proud Springbok and a kind-hearted person who treated everyone with respect,” Alexander said.
Family Man and Inspiration
Edgar Rathbone, CEO of the Bulls, described Hendricks as more than just a talented player. “He was a brother, a son, a proud dad, and a friend. He had a special smile that brightened every room. Cornal was a true role model for young and old.”
Jake White, director of rugby at the Bulls, also shared kind words. “It was a privilege to coach Cornal. He returned to rugby against the odds and became an inspiration. He showed hope, courage, and hunger for life.”
A Life That Touched Many
Cornal Hendricks will be remembered not only for his achievements on the rugby field but also for his courage, resilience, and positive spirit. His story touched the hearts of many in the South African rugby community and beyond.
He leaves behind his wife Stephaney and their children. The rugby world is mourning the loss of a true sportsman who gave his all and never stopped smiling.
