When will Ashura 2025 be observed in Pakistan?

21 June, 2025 15:44

The Islamic New Year 1447 Hijri is expected to begin on Friday, June 27, based on current astronomical forecasts. Experts say the moon of Muharram is unlikely to be visible on Tuesday evening, June 25.

Moon Sighting Details

According to astronomers, the new moon will be born on June 25 at 3:31 PM (Pakistan time). Due to its timing and position, the moon is not expected to be visible in most parts of South Asia and the Middle East that evening. However, limited visibility may be possible through telescopes in some areas of the United States.

Experts say the best chance to sight the moon will be on the evening of Wednesday, June 26. If confirmed, Friday, June 27 will be observed as the 1st of Muharram, marking the beginning of the new Islamic year.

Youm-e-Ashura Expected on July 6

If Muharram starts on June 27, then Youm-e-Ashura — the 10th of Muharram — will likely fall on Sunday, July 6. Ashura is one of the most significant religious days in the Islamic calendar, observed with mourning, reflection, and remembrance, particularly among Shia Muslims.

Official Announcement Pending

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Pakistan will convene on June 26 to gather and verify moon sighting reports. An official announcement will be made that evening after consulting with regional committees and religious scholars.

Muharram and Its Significance

Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam. It is the first month of the Hijri calendar and holds deep religious and historical importance, especially due to the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions at Karbala.
