Juliana Marins Missing: Brazilian Tourist Falls While Hiking Mount Rinjani

23 June, 2025 16:44

Rescue teams in Indonesia are continuing their search for Juliana Marins, a 26-year-old Brazilian tourist who went missing while hiking Mount Rinjani on Saturday morning.

According to local authorities and her family, Juliana was trekking near the crater of the active volcano when she slipped and fell around 6:30 AM local time. Witnesses say she disappeared off a cliff that surrounds the crater trail.

Early Signs of Life

Shortly after the incident, park officials reported hearing Juliana’s screams for help. At the time, she was responsive but appeared to be in shock. Drone footage shared on social media also showed her moving and sitting on the volcanic soil below the path.

However, as rescue teams attempted to descend nearly 300 meters, they were unable to locate her or hear her voice again. By Sunday morning, new drone images showed that she was no longer at her earlier location.

Fog, Terrain Hindering Rescue

Efforts have been slowed due to extreme terrain and heavy fog, which has limited the use of thermal drones. On Monday, rescue workers spotted her again—believed to have fallen even further down the slope—but had to halt the operation due to weather conditions.

Juliana’s family, deeply concerned for her safety, has expressed frustration on social media.

“Tourists are still hiking Mount Rinjani while Juliana is NEEDING HELP! She’s been without food, water, or warm clothes for over three days!” the family wrote.

They also said that rescue teams had only managed to go 250 meters down the slope and still had 350 meters left to reach her before retreating again.

Mount Rinjani’s Risky Trails

Mount Rinjani, standing at 3,726 meters, is Indonesia’s second-highest volcano and a popular destination for international hikers. But it has seen fatal accidents in the past. In 2022, a Portuguese man died after falling from the summit. In May 2025, a Malaysian hiker also lost his life in a similar incident.

The Brazilian Foreign Ministry confirmed it is in contact with Indonesian authorities and has dispatched two embassy representatives to oversee the rescue.

Urgent Calls for Action

While Indonesian officials urge climbers to prioritize safety, the focus remains on saving Juliana Marins, whose condition is still unknown.
