Tragic Honeymoon: Colorado Man Dies After Freak Lightning Strike on Florida Beach

24 June, 2025 15:47

A 29-year-old man from Colorado was struck by lightning while on his honeymoon at New Smyrna Beach, Florida. The man was with his wife when the lightning hit him on the beach. Emergency workers and people nearby rushed to help. They did CPR and took him to the hospital. Sadly, he passed away the next day due to his injuries.

On the same day, two golfers were also hit by lightning at the Venetian Bay Golf Course in Florida. Fortunately, they were checked by emergency teams but did not need to go to the hospital.

Ava Hanner, a public information officer for New Smyrna Beach, reminded everyone, “When thunder roars, go indoors.” She said, “If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning, even if the sky looks clear.”

Florida is known for many lightning strikes. In 2022, the state had about 18.7 million lightning strikes. This means there were 285 strikes per square mile.

Lightning dangers are not new in sports either. In February this year, four women footballers died in Colombia after being struck while sheltering under a tree. The women were playing in a tournament when a thunderstorm hit. They tried to hide but were caught by lightning.

Also, in Peru recently, a lightning strike hit football players during a match. One player died, and five others were hurt. Video footage showed many players falling after the lightning hit.

In the UK, a 9-year-old boy named Jordan Banks died after being struck by lightning during football practice in Blackpool.

These events remind us all to stay safe during storms. Lightning can be very dangerous and can strike suddenly.
