Illinois Teacher Christina Formella Accused of Abusing Student Over Two Years

04 July, 2025 19:06

Christina Formella, a 30-year-old teacher and soccer coach at Downers Grove South High School, is facing 55 criminal charges related to inappropriate behavior with a male student. She has been placed on administrative leave, and an investigation is underway.

Timeline of Events

Authorities say the situation began in 2023, when the student was 14 years old. By the time he turned 15, the teacher was reportedly meeting with him privately during and outside school hours. Officials believe these meetings happened more than 50 times, including at school and at her home.

Formella was arrested earlier this year after the student and his mother reported the case.

How It Was Discovered

The student’s mother became aware of the situation after buying him a new phone. While setting up the device, she found a series of personal messages between her son and Ms. Formella.

Some of the messages showed close emotional exchanges. The mother brought this to the attention of the Downers Grove Police, who began an official investigation.

What Authorities Are Saying

Prosecutors say Formella kept private notes about the student. When asked, she told officers that the notes were simply for managing anxiety and were not about a student. Officials, however, found patterns in the messages and other content that raised serious concerns.

Formella’s Side of the Story

Christina Formella has denied all charges. She claims the student had a crush on her and said that he may have used her phone without permission to send messages to himself. Her family says she is being treated unfairly and judged more harshly because of her gender.

In a statement, her family added: “She is not a criminal. This case has become a public trial where character, not facts, are being attacked.”

School’s Response

The school quickly placed Formella on leave and is working closely with law enforcement.
Principal Arwen Lyp issued a statement: “We are shocked and deeply concerned. Our focus is to support students and families affected by this situation.”

Legal Conditions

Formella is not in jail but must follow strict rules:

  • She must wear a GPS monitor

  • She cannot go near the student or the school

  • She cannot contact minors

Her legal team asked the court to reduce some restrictions, but the request was denied to ensure the safety of the student.

Personal Details

Formella married her longtime partner, Michael, in August 2024. He has stood by her side during the court process and was reportedly surprised by the allegations.

What Happens Next?

Formella is due back in court on August 4, 2025. If convicted, she could face a long sentence.
