Govt announces public holiday on August 15

08 August, 2025 15:40

The Sindh Education Department has announced a public holiday on Friday, August 15, for all government and private schools, colleges, and universities in the province. The holiday is to observe the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA).

According to an official notice, this closure applies to both public and private institutions across Sindh.

Why Is the Holiday Observed?

Chehlum is a religious day marked 40 days after Ashura, to remember the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala. It is a day of mourning for many Muslims around the world, especially in Pakistan.

Four Consecutive Holidays in Sindh

This year, Pakistan’s Independence Day will be observed on Thursday, August 14, followed by Chehlum on Friday, August 15. With Saturday and Sunday after that, people in Sindh will enjoy a rare four-day break from August 14 to 17.

While Chehlum is not a federal holiday in 2025, the Sindh government has officially declared it a holiday for all educational institutions in the province.
