ChatGPT May Soon Operate Your Browser – OpenAI Leak Reveals Plans
There is growing excitement around OpenAI as fresh leaks suggest the company may be preparing to launch its own browser powered by its popular AI agent.
Hidden settings within the Agent mode reveal a switch allowing users to choose between a cloud-based browser or one built directly into OpenAI’s upcoming creation. This potential feature could reshape how ChatGPT interacts with the web, managing browser tabs “like a helpful friend.”
Currently, Agent mode functions on a remote Linux system hosted by Azure, using screenshots and clicks to navigate websites. However, the leaked code points to a new “Use cloud browser” option, along with a trigger designed specifically for OpenAI’s browser on macOS. These findings strongly indicate that OpenAI’s Agent and its in-house browser are being developed to work seamlessly together.
The move also connects with earlier reports that OpenAI is planning to build an AI-friendly browser to rival Google Chrome. Based on Chromium, the browser would integrate ChatGPT-like features, streamline user tasks, and allow OpenAI to monitor usage patterns more closely.
If introduced, a local Agent could speed up processes such as form-filling and browsing by reducing reliance on cloud infrastructure. However, this tighter integration also raises important concerns about privacy, data permissions, and security—issues that will require careful consideration as the technology evolves.
