Pakistan Sets New Diyat Amount 2025: Everything You Need to Know

19 August, 2025 12:16

The federal government of Pakistan has officially revised the “diyat” amount, the compensation paid under Islamic law to victims or their heirs in cases of murder or bodily harm.

A formal notification issued by the Ministry of Finance confirms that the “diyat” amount for 2025 has been set at Rs9,828,670, reflecting the value of 30,630 grams of silver. The revision is based on current silver market rates and is adjusted annually to account for inflation and price fluctuations.

In Islamic law, “diyat” refers to financial compensation given when the aggrieved party opts to forgo “qisas” (retaliatory punishment) in cases of unintentional murder or injury. The compensation, traditionally linked to silver, is intended to provide justice and reconciliation between parties.

The updated amount will now apply to all ongoing and upcoming legal proceedings where cases are settled through “diyat.” According to the Finance Ministry, these routine updates ensure the compensation remains consistent with both Islamic legal principles and prevailing economic conditions.
