Punjab launches new system for vehicle number plates
Punjab has launched a new system for vehicle registration and number plates. Under this system, the number plate will now be registered in the name of the owner, not the vehicle.
When a car is sold, the number plate will remain with the original owner. Old vehicles can also be re-registered in the name of their current owners.
According to the Director General of Excise Punjab, if a vehicle is sold, the number plate will stay in the seller’s name for two years. The Excise Department will now issue number plates in the name of owners for nearly 30 million vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, rickshaws, and commercial buses.
If someone sells their vehicle, they can keep their existing number plate for two years, while the buyer will receive a new plate.
Excise DG Umar Sher Chatha explained that this step will make it easier to track vehicles used in illegal activities.
The department also said that if an owner wants to use their old number plate on a new vehicle, they will need to pay an additional fee.
