New Provinces Movement Gains Momentum in Karachi

30 August, 2025 18:48

Karachi – In recent days, banners have appeared across major roads of Karachi, installed by the group Naujawanan-e-Muhajir (Youth of the Muhajirs), openly supporting the creation of new provinces in Pakistan.

The campaign highlights a growing sentiment among Karachi’s citizens that administrative restructuring is necessary for fair governance, equal opportunities, and long-term development.

The call for new provinces is not new, but it has gained fresh momentum as people in Karachi feel deprived of their due rights despite contributing significantly to Pakistan’s economy. The banners, carrying the slogan #NewProvinceForBetterPakistan, appeal to national leadership and, in particular, to the Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal General Asim Munir, to take action and resolve this long-standing issue.

A Hope from General Asim Munir

The youth movement expressed strong confidence in General Asim Munir’s leadership, stating that the entire Muhajir community and indeed all Pakistanis believe he can help Karachi residents secure their legitimate rights. According to the statement, granting Karachi a province of its own would not only accelerate the city’s development but also guarantee the overall progress of Pakistan.

“This step will make history,” the appeal read, “and General Asim Munir’s name will be remembered as the leader who ensured Pakistan’s progress by strengthening its foundations.”

Why More Provinces Are Necessary

Supporters argue that Pakistan cannot be governed efficiently under the current administrative structure. With rapidly growing populations, the existing provinces struggle to deliver public services equitably. The demand for new provinces is framed not as a threat to national unity, but as a practical solution for governance.

They also directly address opposition from some groups, especially in Sindh, who fear division:

  • “Creating provinces does not mean creating new countries,” the banners explained.

  • “It is about ensuring convenience, justice, and effective governance for the people.”

The Case of Karachi

Karachi, Pakistan’s financial hub, contributes the largest share to the national exchequer, yet locals often complain of poor infrastructure, lack of development, and unfair distribution of resources. Many believe that an independent provincial status for Karachi would ensure:

  • Fair allocation of resources

  • Better governance and accountability

  • Economic growth benefitting all of Pakistan

  • Reduced ethnic and political tensions

The Broader Vision

Advocates conclude that without creating new provinces, Pakistan cannot be effectively managed in the long run. Smaller, well-administered provinces are seen as the only way to provide relief and opportunities to the masses.
