Chenab River Floodwaters Sweep Sialkot, Jhang; 180 Villages Submerged, Multan at Risk
Flood conditions remain critical across Punjab as water levels have yet to return to normal, and floodwaters entering populated areas have caused devastation in several districts. Floodwaters from the Chenab have submerged 180 villages in Punjab’s Jhang, destroying crops and displacing thousands.
Chenab River Situation
At Head Trimmu, the Chenab River’s flow has surged to 249,000 cusecs. According to the Flood Forecasting Division Lahore, Head Khanki is recording 229,000 cusecs, while Qadirabad has reached 203,000 cusecs, both indicating high flood levels.
The Chenab’s floodwaters have swept through Sialkot, Wazirabad, and Chiniot, before entering Jhang, where 180 villages have gone under water. Hundreds of acres of crops are ruined, and connecting roads have disappeared beneath floodwaters. Rescue teams evacuated stranded people using boats, though many families, including women and children, were forced to spend the night under the open sky without food or water. Victims appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for immediate relief.
In Multan, floodwaters have entered farmland in Shujabad Tehsil, affecting 140 villages. Commissioner Aamir Karim warned that on Monday, nearly 800,000 cusecs of floodwater may pass through Multan, with 700,000 cusecs expected from Head Trimmu and 90,000 cusecs from the Ravi. He noted that a controlled breach may be made at Head Muhammad Wala, which can handle up to 1 million cusecs.
Sutlej River Floods
The Sutlej River remains at extremely high flood levels at Ganda Singh Wala, where the water flow stands at 253,068 cusecs. At Head Sulaimanki, the flow is 154,219 cusecs, also a high flood situation. Several villages around Ganda Singh Wala remain submerged, while in Bahawalnagar, many residents have refused to evacuate.
Ravi River Updates
At the Balloki Headworks on the Ravi, all spillways were opened after water levels rose. The flow has since reduced to 211,395 cusecs, but extremely high flood conditions persist. Nearby villages, crops, and livestock have been severely affected. In Narowal and Nankana Sahib, embankment breaches have pushed floodwaters into both rural and urban areas.
School Closures in Affected Areas
Due to the worsening situation, schools in Pakpattan and Arifwala will remain closed from September 1 until further notice. According to the education department, the step has been taken to safeguard students and teachers. At Arifwala, floodwaters have reached the Noora Bund, while in Pakpattan, rescue teams are evacuating people using boats.
So far, 30 people have lost their lives, while more than 1.5 million residents have been affected.
NDMA Relief Rations Delivery In Punjab Continues
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in coordination with provincial governments, is continuing relief operations in affected areas of Punjab.
NDMA has finalized a comprehensive relief ration delivery plan for six districts of the province. As part of this plan, convoys of four trucks each, carrying relief rations, have been dispatched to Wazirabad and Hafizabad.
According to NDMA, each ration bag weighs 46 kilograms and contains 22 essential items. Relief supplies have already been sent to Narowal and Sialkot, while preparations are underway for the dispatch of rations to Chiniot and Jhang.
On the directive of the Prime Minister, NDMA affirmed that further relief efforts will continue in the coming days.
