Nepal Sets 2026 Election Date Amid Curfew, Military Control in Kathmandu

14 September, 2025 09:43

Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki announced the upcoming elections immediately after taking office.

According to foreign media reports, Nepal’s first female Prime Minister took oath of office yesterday.

The report stated that following the appointment of the interim Prime Minister, the Presidential Office issued a statement announcing the upcoming elections.

According to the Presidential Office, the President, on the recommendation of the interim Prime Minister, dissolved the parliament and set March 5, 2026, as the date for the elections.

It is worth noting that the army has taken control of the capital, Kathmandu. After last week’s unrest, the situation in Nepal has started to return to normal.

Some roads in the country are still closed, and military patrols are ongoing. Additionally, a curfew is in place from 7 PM to 6 AM.

It should be remembered that 51 people were killed and more than 1,300 injured in last week’s protests against the ban on social media in Nepal.

Those killed in the violent protests included 21 protesters, 9 prisoners, 3 police officers, and 18 other individuals.
