The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution calling for the immediate restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The resolution was moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and was passed by voice vote after a heated debate.
BJP lawmakers strongly opposed the resolution, particularly references to the region’s previous autonomy and special status. BJP members staged protests and walked out of the Assembly before the vote.
The resolution also refers to earlier Assembly resolutions passed in 2000 and 2024. Several lawmakers had proposed amendments concerning Article 370, Article 35A and other issues related to Jammu and Kashmir’s former constitutional status.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the latest resolution was focused on restoring full statehood and called for the resolution to be forwarded to the Government of India.
